eine kleine Compound-Maschine - a little nice compound-engine

Ist euch schon mal aufgefallen, dass es Dampfmaschinen gibt, bei denen zwei unterschiedlich große Zylinder verwendet werden? So z.B. bei der Märklin 4158. Das kommt daher, da es sich hier um sogenannte Verbund-Dampfmaschinen oder auch Compound-Dampfmaschinen handelt. Bei diesen Maschinen wird der Abdampf des ersten Zylinders (Hochdruck-Zylinder) in einen weiteren Zylinder (Niederdruck-Zylinder) zur Ausnutzung der noch vorhandenen Energie geleitet. Beide Zylinder wirken auf die gleiche Kurbelwelle und weisen normalerweise ein Verhältnis des Kolbendurchmessers von 1:1,5-1,7 auf.

Have you ever noticed steam engines that use two different sized cylinders? For example, with the Märklin 4158. This is because these are so-called composite steam engines or compound steam engines. In these machines, the exhaust steam from the first cylinder (high-pressure cylinder) is directed into another cylinder (low-pressure cylinder) to utilize the remaining energy. Both cylinders act on the same crankshaft and normally have a piston diameter ratio of 1:1.5-1.7.

Welch ein Zufall, dass die beiden Zylindergrößen bei Wilesco den gleichen Hub haben und ein Verhältnis im Durchmesser von 1:1,77. Da muss man ja schon fast eine Compound-Maschine daraus bauen. So habe ich also den Zylinder einer D10 mit dem einer D16 kombiniert.

What a coincidence that the two cylinder sizes at Wilesco have the same stroke and a diameter ratio of 1:1.77. You almost have to build a compound machine out of it. So I combined the cylinder of a D10 with that of a D16.

Aufgrund des größeren Schieberkastens beim D16-Zylinder ergibt sich zwar eine etwas andere Lage, aber das darf bei der Maschine durchaus so sein. Man darf ja ruhig sehen, dass da ein Unterschied ist.

Due to the larger slide box on the D16 cylinder, the position is slightly different, but that is ok in this case with the machine. You can certainly see that there is a difference.

Etwas kompliziert war die Kombination aus D16-Zylinder und den kleinen Schubstangen von Wilesco. Aber durch etwas Handarbeit am Exzenter hat auch das funktioniert.

The combination of the D16 cylinder and the small push rods from Wilesco was a bit complicated. But with a little manual work on the eccentric, that also worked.

Und da ich zufällig noch ein paar Teile einer alten D15 rumliegen hatte, habe ich das Compound-Aggregat auf die wohl schönste Wilesco-Grundplatte aller Zeiten gebaut. Optisch täten zwar ein paar größere Schwungräder gut, aber ich wollte nicht in die schöne Grundplatte schneiden.

And since I happened to have a few parts of an old D15 lying around, I built the compound unit on what is probably the most beautiful Wilesco base plate of all time. A few larger flywheels would be good visually, but I didn't want to cut into the beautiful base plate.
