mein eigener Dampf-Renner - my own Steam-Racer

Nachdem es ja (leider) kein Dampf-Auto von Wilesco gibt, musste ich mir halt mein Eigenes bauen.

As Wilesco does not offer a Steam-Car I decided to built my own one. 

Es begann Alles mit ein paar Bildern eines Stanley Steamers. Als ich diese Bilder gesehen habe war mir klar, dass ich so ein Auto bauen muss. Natürlich wie immer soweit möglich auf Wilesco-Basis. Somit war klar, dass die Räder der D320 verwendet werden und ich habe die Proportionen entsprechend an den Bildern abgemessen und zum Durchmesser der Räder ins Verhältnis gesetzt.

It all started with a few pictures of a Stanley Steamer. When I saw these pictures it was clear to me that I had to build a car like this. Of course, as far as possible on a Wilesco basis. So it was clear that the wheels of the D320 would be used and I measured the proportions according to the pictures and compared them to the diameter of the wheels.

Um ausreichend Leistung zu haben fiel die Wahl auf den Kessel der D16 und den Zylinder der D10 als Antrieb. In dem ersten Entwurf hatte ich über einen seitlich sitzenden Zylinder nachgedacht.

In order to have sufficient power, there was a choice of the boiler and the cylinder of the D16 as the drive. In the first draft I had thought about a cylinder sitting on the side.

Mit dem Kessel der D16 war aber auch der ursprüngliche Gedanke hinfällig das Kesselhaus der D365 zu nutzen. So musste also ein eigenes Kesselhaus angefertigt werden. Es stand schon von vornherein fest, dass der Kessel selbst als "Motorhaube" dienen soll und es keine zusätzliche Abdeckung geben wird.

With the boiler of the D16, however, the original idea of using the boiler house of the D365 was also obsolete. So a separate boiler house had to be built. It was clear from the outset that the boiler itself would serve as the "bonnet" and there would be no additional cover.

Um die Optik aber näher am originalen Stanley zu haben musst der Zylinder unter dem Fahrzeug versteckt werden. Daher habe ich ein doch recht kompaktes Antriebsmodul gebaut.

In order to have the look closer to the original Stanley, the cylinder has to be hidden under the vehicle. So I built a fairly compact drive module.

Eine handwerkliche Herausforderung war die Herstellung der Sitze mit dreidimensional geformtem Blech. Hat aber doch ganz gut funktioniert.

A technical challenge was the manufacture of the seats with three-dimensionally shaped sheet metal. But it worked quite well.

Ähnlich herausfordernd war die Anfertigung des Kühlergrills. Dieser sieht nicht nur gut aus, sondern funktioniert gleichzeitig zur Befestigung des Kessels.

Making the radiator grille was just as challenging. This not only looks good, but also works to attach the boiler.

Der Tank des Originales fungiert in meinem Modell als Kondensataufnahme.

In my model, the tank of the original acts as a condensate collector.

Nach dem Rest des Chassis, dem Rest der Karosserie und so "Kleinigkeiten" wie einer Lenkung war der Rohbau abgeschlossen.

After the rest of the chassis, the rest of the body and "little things" like a steering system, the body shell was complete.

Allerdings musste die Lenkung nochmal optimiert werden. Nur mit einer zusätzlichen Übersetzung ergab sich ein realistisches Verhältnis zwischen Lenkradumdrehungen und Radeinschlag. Der Zahnbogen ist ein modifiziertes Zahnrad der D305..

However, the steering had to be optimized again. Only with an additional translation a realistic relationship between steering wheel turns and wheel deflection was possible. The gear arch is a modified gear from the D305.

Und mit "etwas Lack" und zusätzlichem Ersatzrad bin ich mit der Gesamtoptik doch recht zufrieden.

And with "some paint" and an additional spare wheel, I'm quite satisfied with the overall look.

Da ich selbst aus dem Großraum Stuttgart komme, musste ich als "Stuttgarter Autohersteller" natürlich den Renner vor den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt in Szene setzen. Hier vor dem Schloss Solitude.

As I am from the greater Stuttgart area, as a "Stuttgart car manufacturer" I naturally had to stage the racer in front of the city's sights. Here in front of Solitude Palace.

In der Nähe von Stuttgart gab es auch mal eine Rennstrecke, die sogenannte "Solitude". Das Start/Ziel-Gebäude existiert heute noch. Eine passendere Kulisse kann man sich kaum vorstellen.

There used to be a racetrack near Stuttgart, the so-called "Solitude". The start/finish building still exists today. One can hardly imagine a more suitable setting.

Den Abschluss der Stuttgarter Fotoreise bildete dann das Mercedes-Benz-Museum. Mehr Automobilgeschichte an einem Ort gibt es kaum.

The end of the Stuttgart photo tour was the Mercedes-Benz Museum. There is hardly more automotive history in one place.

Hier traf mein Dampf-Renner dann auf andere Berühmtheiten der Fahrzeug-Renn-Geschichte.
